1. ABOUT THE GREATER PLETTENBERG BAY AREA

Plettenberg Bay, known as the playground of the rich and famous, is situated on a bay which early Portuguese explorers called Baia Formosa or Beautiful Bay . In the distance are the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains , forests, and tracts of fynbos which nurtures the magnificent protea which is our national flower. Sunny "Plett', as the village is affectionately called, boasts 300 out of 365 sunny days in the year, so great weather is almost certainly guaranteed. It is truly picture postcard perfect with the backdrop of the mountains, blue Indian Ocean , and endless white sandy beaches.

This area is unparalleled for its biodiversity of fauna and flora and boasts vast numbers of whales and dolphins. Guests can view them from the many land based look-out spots or join one of the excellent whale and dolphin watching boat safaris to see them at close quarters. There are more than 15 private and state owned nature reserves, where visitors can walk, go on safaris or even explore on horseback. Robberg Nature Reserve is a peninsula, thought to be worthy of world heritage status, which should be visited as a priority. It offers sweeping views, superb dolphin and whale watching, hiking routes, and a cave, Nelson Bay Cave , which is an archaeological site with evidence of human habitation of more than 120 thousand years.

Besides its natural heritage, Plett is the “in” place to be and the main street of the village is lined with boutiques, arts and craft shops, antiques, specialist shops, coffee shops and restaurants. Superb golf and tennis clubs welcome visitors. Many other sea and land sporting activities are available.

Tsitsikamma is the area of the garden route which the San people called the “place of sparkling waters”. Here the high mountains, deep gorges and rugged coastline are covered with tall indigenous forests which is home to ancient trees such as Stinkwood, Yellowwood, Ironwood, Hard Pear and many others. Tsitsikamma offers echo-tourism and adventure opportunities for everyone. Storms River Village is the centre of echo and adventure tourism. Dozens of options are available from extreme sports such as the Bloukrans highest bungy jump in the world, Storms River rafting, the challenging five day Otter Trail or Tsitsikamma Trail, to laid back walking in the forest and on the coast.

 

2. THE CRAGS

Between Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma lies The Crags which is convenient to both but also has a character of its own and a huge amount to offer the tourist. Largely rural, it has a magnificent setting against the craggy Tsitsikamma mountains and is convenient to the beautiful beaches of Nature's Valley and Keurbooms below. It is surrounded by Nature Reserves namely Keurbooms Nature Reserve, Whiskey Creek, Tsitsikamma National Park and Soetkraal which is being incorporated into the Eden to Addo National Park. To the south is the magnificent Indian Ocean.

With this tremendous heritage legacy, it is no surprise then that The Crags has so much to offer in the way of activities. It is close to the beaches, its natural resources offer many opportunities for echo-tourism, it is the centre for polo, having many world famous polo estates and it is proud to offer the exciting Cruise The Crags tourist route. On this route are 17 listed activity and restaurant destinations and 17 “snoozes” or bed and breakfasts and guest houses. Amonst the activities are the original Barnyard Theatre, Monkeyland, The Crags Elephant Sanctuary, Birds of Eden, Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness centre, Kurland Hotel, Bramon Wines.

Redford House is situated on the Redford Road in The Crags and is very conveniently situated to take advantage of any of the activities in Plett, Keurbooms, The Crags, Nature's Valley or the Tsitsikamma.
